Folditure Space Lunar Sunflake Systems<\/strong> are supported on stable base structures that can accommodate slopes of 15 degrees or more. Because of potential terrain shadowing in the lunar polar regions, the array assembly is elevated high above the surface. To capture the optimum and consistent solar energy, the array rotates 360 degrees, tracking the sun's near-horizontal angle.<\/p>\n

Pyramid Hinge<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\n\n

The Pyramid Hinge is an origami-inspired folding mechanism that allows flat panel-based designs to unfold into rigid three-dimensional structures. The patented mechanism was originally applied to smaller applications, such as foldable furniture, where its robust geometry enabled super-compact, flat designs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Pyramid Hinge Array<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\n\n

The Pyramid Hinge Array is a combination of Pyramid Hinge units that are deployed or retracted by a central motorized movement.\u00a0This design was featured in the\u00a0original\u00a0Sunflake\u00a010kW design.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0array can be designed with varying numbers of subdivisions. It supports the\u00a0option\u00a0for\u00a0a fully open flat position that is less than 360 degrees, and it can also be developed for non-flat (dome-shaped) deployed structures.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Pyramid Hinge XL<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\n\n

In the XL hinge design, a single power source enables the deployment and retraction of the entire array in both linear and radial directions. In the current 50kW Sunflake XL, three levels of the extension arm support three levels of folded flexible solar array gores that overlap when stowed. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n
